Mayor Shelby Rognstad
When first discovering Sandpoint, visitors are often taken aback by the astounding beauty, world class recreational opportunities, Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort, our historic downtown, abundant public art, exceptional parks, trails, walkable neighborhoods all juxtaposed by the largest lake in Idaho—Beautiful Lake Pend Oreille.
But there is more to this story. Our small city is where some of the most innovative companies in the state are based. Host to thriving industries like aerospace, biomedical, software development, food production and manufacturing, Sandpoint is a perfect storm of innovation and productivity.
Why is it that companies like Quest Aircraft, Tamarack Aerospace, Kochava, Biomedical Innovations, and Litehouse Foods choose Sandpoint? Leadership in these companies appreciate the high quality of life that Sandpoint residents enjoy—recreational amenities, great schools, and the arts. However, business leaders also know that it has to make economic sense as well. A committed workforce, low energy costs, competitive wages, local, regional and statewide economic development incentives, a local airport and a 90 minute drive to Spokane International all add up to smart business in a very amenity rich area.
Whereas, led by the National Institute for Civil Discourse, there is an effort underway in our great country to revive and restore civility in order to achieve a higher level of public discourse;
Whereas, civility reduces rudeness, ridicule, and lack of respect for the open exchange of ideas;
Whereas, civility imporoves well-being, restores trust, and encourages people to participate in building a brighter future for generations to come;
Whereas, civility assists in the process of working together to create lasting solutions to our most pressing challenges, while fostering respect among opposing groups; and
Whereas, people should feel comfortable and respected while exploring their own worldviews, as well as worldviews outside their own.
Now therefore I, Shelby Rognstad, Mayor, do hereby proclaim May 2017 to be Revivie Civility Month in Sandpoint and call upon the people of the City of Sandpoint to celebrate the month by exercising civilityand respect towards one other now and in the future.
